Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

Lead Partner with Bedford University

Preston Hedges Trust is proud to work in partnership with the University of Bedford to support the training and development of new teachers.  The Trust is able to offer experienced mentors in our schools and Key Stages to help and support the development of new trainee teachers.

Preston Hedges Trust offers placements for teachers wishing to train in the Early Years and in the Primary Key Stages 1 and 2.  We work closely with our Trust primary schools and trainees have the opportunity to visit and spend time in their placement schools prior to the start of the course. This is often valued by our trainees as it prepares them well for embarking on the course in the September.

Upon successful completion of the course, 90%+ year on year of teachers gain employment within Lead Partners schools.

Courses are structured with four days each week on school placement and each Friday at the University of Bedford campus

Choose from 2 training routes:

Primary 3-7 years PGCE (with QTS)

A one-year full-time course for candidates wishing to specialise in the 3-7 age range. Trainees will complete teaching placements in the Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1 and benefit from specialist training in Early Years Foundation Stage and Primary.

Primary 5-11 years PGCE (with QTS)

A one-year full-time course for those wishing to teach in the 5-11 age range. Trainees will complete teaching placements in two contrasting schools as well as gaining experience in EYFS and Key Stage 3.

Why choose this course:

You will learn through classroom experiences and practical application, developing the skills you need to teach in your specialist subject, depending on your chosen route. The course provides 4 days immersed in school and 1 day at the University.  You will experience well-structured intense training and practice weeks with a block placement at the end of the course, that aims to prepare you for employment and your ECT year.

What is an ITE Lead Partner

As an accredited provider of initial teacher education (ITE) the University of Bedfordshire has formed partnerships with a range of schools and academy trusts who support student teachers during their PGCE course. The University works in collaboration with Lead Partners, on a range of issues including:

  • recruitment and assessment of student teachers
  • curriculum design and delivery
  • mentor and lead mentor supply and development
  • sharing knowledge, experience and resources

Choosing to apply to one of the Lead Partners means that you will benefit from the expertise within an organisation, as well as that of the University. Your ITE course curriculum, whether you have applied to the University or Lead Partner, will be the same.

ITT programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status and the award of PGCE from the University of Bedfordshire and 60 Masters level credits. *

*The PGCE route is only open to applicants with a degree classification of 2.2 or higher.
