Why become involved?

You share our commitment to ensuring every child has an extraordinary education and the best possible start in life. As a Trustee, you want to help make sure local schools retain their distinct character, whilst also supporting local families and communities. Experience in the education sector is not required, but familiarity with school governance is highly valued.

Effective boards drive meaningful impact – setting strategic direction, shaping a strong culture, and championing the vision at the heart of our Trust.

What is a Trustee:

The purpose of Governance is to provide:

Strategic leadership and strategic engagement
Accountability and assurance
Regulatory, contractual and statutory requirements
The Trust’s funding agreement

The board also has:

Strategic and statutory responsibility for safeguarding and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) arrangements within (and across) the Trust, ensuring the promotion of pupil welfare and for keeping their estates safe and well-maintained
A role in making sure that it delivers its commitment to other schools and academies, however it is done

The Board of Trustees meet 6 times a year. In addition to this, Trustees would be expected to sit on one of the committees at Trust level: Finance, ARC and Performance who meet 3 times a year via Teams. Trustees will also be required to visit the schools, occasionally during school hours.

Trustees are supported by the Trust Governance Professional and all new Trustees will receive a comprehensive induction and full access to our statutory training programme. As a member of the Confederation of School Trusts (cstuk.org.uk), our Trust benefits from a wide range of specialist resources, advice, and e-learning modules, including a new Preston Hedges Trust training programme.

We are committed to safeguarding children (KCSIE 2025 / KCSIE 2025 ANNEX B – PAGE 149) and young people. Appointment as a Trustee is subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

It is important that Trustees follow The Seven Principles of Public Life – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) and are aware of the principles of ethical leadership.
